When the pickup turned onto the gravel road, Jimmy’s shoulders stiffened.
A white farmhouse waited at the end.
A woman rocked slowly on the porch.
Grandma.
Jimmy lowered his eyes.

The pickup stopped.
The engine went silent.
No one said anything.
Jimmy waited until the driver opened his door.
He climbed down carefully, like the ground might not hold him.
He did not look at the porch.
He did not look at Grandma.

Grandma stood slowly from her rocking chair. She didn’t rush toward him. She didn’t stretch her arms wide. She just walked close enough to be near. “I’m glad you’re here,” she said softly. Jimmy stared at his shoes. He nodded once.

Inside the house, everything felt too neat.
Too quiet.
Grandma showed him a small room with a quilt folded at the end of the bed.
“This is yours,” she said.
Jimmy stepped in, then back out again.
He didn’t touch anything.

Grandma sat in the doorway. Not blocking it. Just there. “You don’t have to talk,” she said gently. Her voice was low and steady. “Sometimes hearts need time.” Jimmy swallowed hard. He kept his eyes on the floorboards.

After a while, Grandma stood. “I’ll be on the porch,” she said. “If you’d like to look around, you may.” She didn’t tell him where to go. She didn’t follow. She gave him space.

Jimmy stepped outside slowly. The farm stretched wide and open. Too open. The sky felt enormous. There were no fences close enough to feel safe. He wished the world were smaller.

Near the pasture fence stood a small lamb. One leg bent slightly beneath her. She shifted awkwardly. She didn’t run when Jimmy came near. She just watched him. Jimmy stopped several steps away. He didn’t move. He didn’t speak. He understood that kind of standing still.

He knelt down, but not all the way. One knee hovered. He kept his head lowered. The lamb trembled once. Jimmy let his hand rest gently in the grass beside her. He did not reach yet. They both stayed that way for a long time.
